"It's a full-time job, being an AIDS patient," says W. Maxwell Lawton, a Washington, D.C., artist who gives himself a testosterone injection once a week to help maintain muscle mass. Every day he follows a strict schedule, taking more than 20 pills between periods of fasting. When he was diagnosed, doctors only gave him three months to live. After participating in successful drug trials, he hopes he will live to see a cure.
